Graduate School

One ‘size’ absolutely does not fit all
Unlike the undergraduate Common Application essay you wrote a few years ago, your graduate school essay needs to give a specific nod to the graduate program to which you are applying. It must demonstrate, through your story, how you are a great fit for its incoming class next fall. You may also highlight your career goals and seek to demonstrate why each school to which you apply is instrumental to your future career.

The more you know about the school, the easier it is to write an essay that speaks to it.
We’ll start this process together with a little research to understand the culture, the teaching method, the class profile, faculty/student research, and the general social climate of the school. A little time invested in this step goes a long way to writing more compelling essays.

Getting to YES

We will weave notes from this research into the story of your life, your motivations, and your future plans.

  • I will help you craft an intriguing introduction statement for your essay, compelling the admissions staff to want to learn more about you.
  • We will concisely illuminate what makes you unique as well as a great fit for each graduate program to which you apply. We want to show how your past shaped who you are and why each graduate program will help you get to who you wish to be in the future.
  • I will help you manage use of jargon that demonstrates knowledge of your specific area of interest with what is reasonable for a less-technical application reader in the admissions office.
  • I will help you balance the tone of your essays between personal and professional.
  • It is likely the schools will have more than one essay requirement. If so, I will help make sure each essay contains unique aspects that define you while cohesively fitting together into one picture of who you are.

In summary, I will help you get to YES by presenting a balanced and compelling picture of you as a perfect fit for each program to which you apply.

Your success is my success

The other sections of my website primarily speak to parents about their child’s journey on this process. For undergraduate applications, my own getting to YES from parents is required before I work with their children. As such, those pages of this website speak to my client, the parents.

Of course, that is different with you. That said, we’ll use the same techniques in working together so please review those sections (GET TO YES and WAYS OF WORKING TOGETHER) and forgive the ‘child’ reference!
